Delta Airline Seating Assignments

12. Re: Delta -no seat assignment

"We weren't offered the option to get pre-assigned seats" - Well, I bet you booked via a third party as opposed to directly with the airline. When you book through a third part site you can still select your seats. You take your Delta confirmation number to the website where you should have purchased the tickets in the first place and change or select your seats in "My Trip".

Delta has followed the United model of allowing part of the economy section to have extended legroom seating. They call it Economy Comfort. Usually the regular economy section sells out first, with plenty of seats still available in EC. Since there are seats remaining to be sold on the plane, you can still buy a seat however, you cannot select a seat in regular economy. That doesn't mean you don't have a seat as the airline will move people to EC, or provide you a seat in EC at no extra charge... but you can't select those seats for yourself without paying the "upgrade" fee.

The probability of being involuntarily denied boarding (IDB) is remote. But, if there needs to be somebody chosen, they are chosen from the people without seat assignment who are flying on the lowest ticket fare. As such we circle back to the advice that you should always buy from the airline and always chose your seat no matter how you purchase the ticket.
